<i>p</i> ‐Menthadienes as Biorenewable Feedstocks for a Monoterpene‐Based Biorefinery

چکیده
Abstract A terpene‐based biorefinery is described that uses crude sulfate turpentine (CST) and gum (GT) to produce mixtures of p ‐menthadienes ( ‐MeDs) as biorenewable terpene feedstocks. An acid catalyzed ring opening reaction (6 m aq. H 2 SO 4 , 90 °C) first used convert the major bicyclic monoterpenes (α‐pinene, β‐pinene, 3‐carene) in untreated CST (or GT with 5 mol% Me S) into monocyclic ‐MeDs. These unpurified sulfurous ‐MeD (α‐terpinene, γ‐terpinene, isoterpinolene) are then feedstocks for oxidative aromatization (OA), ozonolysis, Diels–Alder, hydrogenation reactions ‐cymene, fragrances, anti‐oxidants, drugs, biopolymers, biofuels. Mechanistic studies OA ‐MeDs ‐cymene reveal hydroperoxide acts an initiator polar radical intermediates stabilized by DMSO generated situ through aerobic oxidation S. This enables be converted 50–60% yields (two steps) using a process only requires aqueous acid, oxygen, heat, final distillation step.

Conversion of biorenewable feedstocks: New challenges in heterogeneous catalysis
For biorenewable feedstocks to serve as a significant source of chemicals and/or fuels, the development of new chemical processes as well as biological processes will be required. However, the conversion of biorenewable feedstocks with heterogeneous catalyst-based processes provides new challenges in inorganic catalyst research and development relative to historical work with petrochemical feed...

متن کاملMicroalgal triacylglycerols as feedstocks for biofuel production: perspectives and advances.
Microalgae represent an exceptionally diverse but highly specialized group of micro-organisms adapted to various ecological habitats. Many microalgae have the ability to produce substantial amounts (e.g. 20-50% dry cell weight) of triacylglycerols (TAG) as a storage lipid under photo-oxidative stress or other adverse environmental conditions. Fatty acids, the building blocks for TAGs and all ot...
متن کاملPlant triacylglycerols as feedstocks for the production of biofuels.
Triacylglycerols produced by plants are one of the most energy-rich and abundant forms of reduced carbon available from nature. Given their chemical similarities, plant oils represent a logical substitute for conventional diesel, a non-renewable energy source. However, as plant oils are too viscous for use in modern diesel engines, they are converted to fatty acid esters. The resulting fuel is ...
